Buckets for tomatoes?
« on: January 18, 2009, 19:50 »
12" pots are so expensive I can't remember exactly how much as I decided there was no way I was going to buy any!
I recently discovered that buckets are often 12" diameter, so have I had a brainwave or am I missing something?  :tongue2:
(I have very nice drill bit things to cut holes of almost whatever size I like in the bottom of them.)

Edit forgot to add that B&Q has vivid orange ones at about a £1 and ASDA plain black ones at £1.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I used builders buckets for my tomatoes last year - one to a bucket. They were all fine with a good crop. I grew Gardeners Delight, Black Russian and some tiddlers that I can't remember the name of.

I get the used flower buckets from Morrisons.  They have them in 2 different sizes.  Both big enough for toms.  They are only too pleased to give them away.

I hadn't seen them before so I reckon they just came in in the last few days, and will presumably disappear just as mysterriously when they are all gone ;)

I am loving the flower buckets idea - will ask at my local t............ when i next go.
found a fab garden centre not too far from me that puts all its old pots in skips outside, so get quite a lot from them, chilis did well in the biguns last year.
Buckets also, but as nearest asda and band q are 1/2 hour away unless i am going there anyway its a bit of a way to go if they have none
keeping my eyes open for cheep ones nearby though now, had not thought of either of those ideas, dur.
thats what i love about this site, you all have brilliant ideas  :D
just keep breathing................

I have befriended my local FLORISTS - the cut flowers are delivered in black buckets and they used to chuck 'em away - I take the lot now - keep some for myself and distribute the rest at the Allotment shop......  I keep the girls happy in the florists with the odd box of cakes!

I saw these in Derby and got 2.  I guess they would be great for toms....  but in my book, you can't beat free flower pots.

I always use these
Sankey Tomato Pot Pack Black (W) 230 x (L) 230mm
or 9" by 9" in english (5ltres).  From B&Q prob elsewhere as well three for £2.78.  Pots still good after three years use.  Unless you can get them free these ain't bad.

If you want to look for yourself put Sankey in the search box in www.diy.co.uk

They also do:

Sankey Gropot Black (W) 250 x (L) 250mm £2.98 for three 10" x10" 7.5 litres

Sankey Gropot Black (W) 280 x (L) 280mm £2.98 for two 11" x11" 10 ltres
