Wilkos had onion sets today £1.25 for what looked about 40-50 bulbs.
1 red, 2 varieties of shallots and 3 varieties of what I call normal onions
Can I plant them yet or do I have to wait?
also how far apart?

Mine go in around March time.

I give them 6" between sets & 12" between rows, although most books say you can plant them closer. I like the space for hoeing!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As DD said. When I first got an allotment, I planted my onions at the recommended spacings. I couldn't walk between the rows to weed and there was no way near enough space to hoe. The onions very quickly became engulfed in weeds and I had very small onions that year.
Now, I space my rows at 12 inches apart.

Shallots are fine planted now but I would wait until February. Onions need to wait until March, in my opinion.

12 inch rows are good for hoeing. If you want large onions space at 6 inches. If you want smaller onions, often preferred in the kitchen, space closer at 3/4 inches. There is nothing to say you cannot vary the spacing along the row so that you get a mix of big and small.

Way to early to chuck onions in IMO.
