I've found that 1.2m is about as wide as I can reach without overstretching.  Any wider and I end up accidentally trampling any crops on the edge.

I found that 8x4[english] fits just about right on a standerd lotty plot
end to end it gives tou about 2 foot to walk betwen them and you can easly reach the middle for weding
