She might just perk up a bit now she's laid :?

At least it shows the right things are working - if you know what I mean :D

Fingers crossed for her :)

Hi, phoned a local vet who said there is not much they can do if the chicken has diarreah and that ex batts are likely not to last as long as normal chickens and that it would cost £43 to bring her in so it would be kinder to do the deed myself! He also said that it was likely she was vaccinated so it cannot be anything serious but obviously it could still be fatal. Why don't I just get another it would be cheaper.
I felt outraged and disappointed at this advice.
However, on a better note, Alice was put indoors and pampered and I then cleaned and scrubbed the coop and put in fresh wood shavings and straw.
She picked up so I put her back out when I fed the other two and she ate and pecked around at the grass and did not go back in until bedtime. Soooo fingers crossed she will be better tomorrow. Will let you know. x

Hi, well this morning Alice has come out with the others :)  although she still seems a bit subdued, I will just wait and see how she is, hopefully she is on the mend.
Also, I have seen quite a few rats around the hen house and there is evidence of them burrowing in the run.
I have put poison in tubes outside the girls pen at night but it's obviously difficult as I do not want to poison the girls. I have thought maybe Alice got some poison but I doubt it as I am so careful with it, but could the rats give my girls diseases?

Although she is a bit better in herself she still has watery poos so I rung another vet who was absolutely lovely and really sympathetic. He said it could be a number of things as they free range and there is not an awful lot that can be done but he has given me a prescription for some anti biotics to put in the water which might help. :tongue2: At least I feel that I am doing something and if the worst came to the worst at least I've tried.
He did not think rats could give them any diseases, if anything it is more likely to be wild birds.

Sort of a mixture of milky runny and clear but also with little blobs of poo.(what a conversation!). It is also sort of mucus like. No blood or anything and she has been wormed just before Christmas.

Hi Linzechris
Hope you don't mind me asking, how is your hen?
I have a girl who is off colour and have just read your thread.

Not sure of exact age as she is an ex battery hen. I got her last August so probably around one and a half :?
Have been giving her the antibiotics and she seems to have perked up and is eating and coming out now but she still isn't quite right, can't put my finger on it. Also poos are still a bit runny.
