The Home Guard!
« on: January 10, 2009, 19:42 »
Went and bought my first ever seed potatoes today, the choice was amazing and i proper enjoyed myself choosing  :D.

In the end i went of Home Guard first early variety.

Anybody grown these before? and any tips would be great?

Another probaly dumb question is there was also 'second earlys' 'main crop' . So my question is do you plant these at the same time but they ready later??

Potatoe growing all new to me but im proper finding it fun already  :D  :D
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Yes, that's right.  Spuds all go into the ground at the same time but take different lengths of time to grow - first earlies the quickest (hence ready first), then second earlies, then maincrop

I'll be getting mine from my association in a couple of weeks, at the same time I order my discounted seeds  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They say its easier to grow the earlies (first and second) as a beginner because your less likely to get pests and diseases by the time they're read to be dug up.  However, I'm going to have a go at growing Maincrop this year, even though we get blight on our site.  Am I a muppet or what?!!!

I've grown Home Guard the past couple of years.  Easy and delicious!  Best straight out of the ground... :)

I've never actually tried storing them because they tend to go straight from the plot to the pot....

Reminds me of summer. Dig, wash, boil (no need to peel), cool, add mayo and home-grown chopped chives - best potato salad in the world!
Sally (N.Ireland) Organic as far as I know!

Plant plenty.  Celebrate success.  (Let selective memory deal with the rest.)

I grew Golden Wonder last year as a trial.

Never again, slugs loved them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
