Spring is nearly upon us and the tats are chitting happily in their trays.
Perhaps they shouldn't be!
Perhaps they should already be in the ground!

I have just come across this site and it makes interesting reading, perhaps food for thought, and he does make sense I think in his method.
Anyway here it is for you to read..

I think it is worth a go in my area, cos my garden has lots of room in the winter and it dos not get water logged, so i might benefit from a early crop .

Every other potato item has people complaining that slugs have eaten their crop - and that is by about August. What is going to protect these?

Oh yesss

Some people are dead against this, others do it all the time. I've done it in the past with no problems, but after the bad spell of blight we had a couple of years back I've not done so, but if you just want to try a row in the autumn then can't see a problem with it esp if they are your own.

Slugs may be dormant by that time, I would think that they have fed in the summer/autumn months then sleep through winter.

They do and by digging over it exposes them to predators etc. you only need one eye to sprout then your off  :) so as long as slug damage to the seed pot is not complete then you should be able to get a crop ???

Hi, Bob Flowerdew suggested this on GQT last autumn and much to the disgust of some of my fellow allotment buddies I have planted a few.
His theory was the volunteer potatoes which inevitably turn up where you don't expect them have lasted the winter underground so why shouldn't deliberately planted ones? He seemed to think you could get them a few weeks earlier if you were lucky.

Aidy, that is a very thought provative article and it goes to prove that no one way of doing something is the only way.  I really do think there is something in it concept which rings true.  I had a few volunteer Pink Fir Apple plants come up from peelings in my row of Runner Beans last season and refused to remove it mush to the disgust of fellow allotmenteers.  These plants produced the largest PFA potatoes I had grown and I had put it down to the fertitily of the soil.  I may very well give it a try this autumn.  Don't forget the Andes where potatoes originate can be down right cold.
