SODIUM CHLORATE
« on: March 02, 2007, 19:37 »
Hi Gang,
I am new to growing veg, but I have a knowledge of chemistry.
So when I built a greenhouse over weedy grassland, I covered it with wood chippings and gravel and then gave several doses of strong sodium chlorate, which I "Knew" would kill all plant life and deter animal life.

All was well until two weeks ago, I saw a clump of greenery popping up.
I gave it two more doses of extra strong chlorate at 2 day intervals.

And you can guess .......... The shoots are thriving! They look like spring bulbs - perhaps crocusses.

I don't know whether to go for some concentrated nitric acid or tell them they derserve to live on and give them pride of place in the middle of the greenhouse floor.

What do you think?  :D

Hi Jim, Weed control mat is a lot easier.  :D

Sodium chlorate is uneffective on dormant plants (methinks).

Why haven`t you just dug them out,if they are bulbs they should be easy.Personally I would leave them to flower and then move after all there is a little while to full on planting.

sodium chlorate is a total, contact weedkiller. what you need is glysophate which is a systemic total contact weedkiller.
glysophate is sold as round-up.
if the same weeds are coming up after so much s/chlorate, it sounds like they are perenial weeds which will only respond to digging them out, or nuking with round-up.

I used Sodium Cholorate as recommended on the tub....didn't do much at all....better use glysophate...much better at doing the job.
