Forcing rhubarb
« on: January 05, 2009, 10:23 »
I've 4 rhubarb crowns (3 established and 1 just planted) that I've just manured.

I'm planning on "forcing" one of the established crowns. I've a galvanised dust bin - do i just put this over the top? If so, when? Does all the light need excluding or is a little ok?

Any advice, guidance or tips gratefully recieved.
Happy New Year fellow allotmenteers :)

I have put a bucket over mine because I could see pink buds and my mum told me to!

When you see the first signs of the shoots appear, that is the time to put the cover over. Try to keep all light out.
Life is a heap of manure. Growing one minute, stinking the next.

don't force the one you have just planted til next year.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Cheers all, the tiniest of pink shoots were just showing before Christmas but these are now covered with a layer of manure... I'll put the bin over one of the established crowns when i'm next up there.

I wouldn't cover all of them as forcing takes a lot out of the crown.  I do 1 a year and use a large black dustbin with a little hole drilled in the top so the plants climbs up quickly.

Very early and sweet :-)
