How many spuds.....
« on: January 02, 2009, 19:07 »
Hi all, i'm new to allotments and web forums so please bear with me!!

Just wanted someone to tell me how many 1st and 2nd early spuds to plant to keep a hungry family of 4 fed with a few left over to give away?

Many thanks in great anticipation.

The soil is good, well manured and turned over in late Oct, so ready to go!!
If at first you dont succeed, have another pint...

Hey Plot1

I'm new to this gardening lark - last year was my first.  I've just ordered 15kg of seed spuds.  There's only 2 of us so I know that's far too much but I couldn't help myself and my elderly neighbour lets me use her garden so I'll be keeping her in spuds too.

I just realised that this answer is no help at all but welcome.  :D
Are we nearly there yet?

Hi Plot1 and welcome to the forums,

You may have missed this recent thread here which gives an idea of spacing.

Can't recall average yield per plant, someone else may well be along who can answer that one, but in order to be self-sufficient in spuds for a whole year, you'll need to ensure you have adequate cool dry dark space to stop them going soft or sprouting when they naturally want to in the spring.  (Either that or mash / roast a lot for the freezer!)

Do feel free to introduce yourself properly in the welcome forum
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hello plot 1,I'm the sensible one on here.

I go for 3kg of first earlys,9kg of second earlys and 6kg of maincrop

That keeps my family of three eating fresh spuds all through the season and allows me to store the main crop for eating hopefully into Feb.

You will get different  views, but that fits in with my allotment plan.

Good luck

Blimey, we need a lottie!!!

We've only got room in our raised bed for approx 2.5 kgs of pots      Not jealous of those with lotties (much!!!)

Many thanks for that, as its my first year i'm going to chicken out on maincrops because of the blight and my plot is only small 10 x 12 m. I have taken on a small plot while the previous owner relinqueshes his complete plot bit by bit !!!  Still it saves me from being overrun!! So i was hoping to get leeks in after the earlies if that sounds ok??  Please tell me if i'm wrong.....

Plot 1 - if you want to try a few maincrops you could try a blight resistant variety like Sarpo mira

Not sure about leeks - i was given some but planted way too late - think you might have to get them in earlier than you harvest your spuds, but someone else will know :o
HTH
JMW - freezin' here but feeling very virtuous as me & OH got our raspberry supports up & running this morning - had to use an edger to get through the soil

The leeks usually go in when they're "pencil" thick...........sown in March and looking to planting out any time from late May to beginning of July. They should be fine for planting out after you've lifted your first earlies.
