egg laying at night whilst roosting!
« on: December 29, 2008, 21:35 »
Barbara occasionally lays her eggs at night so they land on the poop tray - I have been disposing of these eggs as they have sat in the mire for goodness knows how many hours! Good idea or any suggestions/comments?
Hellooo! I am new to this site and relatively new to keeping chickens but what fun we are having! would love more and hubby coming around to my way of thinking! Kids in love with them!

Hi Helen,

I wouldn't have thought a few hours in poop would do any damage at all to the egg, I would give it a wash and eat it, I do. It would take quite a while for anything to seep its way through the shell into the egg itself.

I have never worried about it and have just given the eggs a wash.

I would have thought that the shell would protect the inside.

I am sure that if you want to dye an egg white (kids tv programs) you need to lightly crack the shell.

I could be wrong and only days away from some chicken poo death........ :cherry:

most of our eggs are laid in the sleeping quarters.
to this end we have straw down under the newspaper.
that probably encourages them to continue, but it's better than broken eggs.
the shells have a protective membrane that stops anything nasty getting in.
and they're not normally dirty unless we're late getting the chickens up, in which case they've had time to tread all over them!

if you wash them when you use them (not before because of the protective membrane), they should be fine.

noone i know has died yet....

You could put a thin layer of fresh bedding under the perches each evening if she is doing it regularly. I usually get a few of those each year.

yes I devised a cunning device to catch the falling eggs - a beer box with fresh straw in for a soft landing. This was fine when it was Barbara at the end of the perch where I could wedge my cunning device! However it appears to ne Clucky or Margot who sit right in the middle where there is no-where to wedge the device! Have lost 3 eggs this week to night laying and non-bounce eggs! MUST fix a full length egg catcher I think!
Unfortunately had first case of egg eating today - shall use mustard in egg shell if it happens again! Let's hope not!
