Any advice on Jiffy plugs or pellets?
« on: December 26, 2008, 16:58 »
Just wondering if anyone uses Jiffy plugs or pellets or whatever they are called? The type that come dry and compressed and need soaking in water. I've seen them for sale and just thought they were a good idea.

Hi out4nowt

They are OK if you can give them the attention they need, but if you are not careful they can dry out, especially when behind glass.

Having said that they work well for courgettes etc - just push in the seed and keep watered, and pot on when the roots push through.

I personally have decided not to buy them again as it is more cost effective to use 3'' pots, or even yogurt pots - more appropriate for someone with your name?

I've not liked the Jiffys either. They're pricey and if you forget to water them even once, they'll dry out and suck the seedling dry as well with no chance of recovery. People also tend to crowd them into pans/whatever and this makes them susceptible to damping off fungus.
