I've done it once on a fairly small scale.

I'd suggest you go for one of the earlier, salad varieties - though this isn't necessary probably.

You can either use a container or a large empty compost bag turned inside out. Edit: make sure you put some drainage holes in the bag.

Place a couple of tubers (literally) on some compost towards the bottom of the container.  Add some more compost, probably to about halfway ish up?  When the leaves start growing through, add some more compost (this is like earthing up in open ground), repeat until you've run out of container.  If you're using the compost bag, start off with it rolled down about halfway, then roll it back up as the plants grow.

You can feel down inside the compost after the flowers have happened, to check the size of the spuds.  Don't forget to water loads.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It's the only way I grow potatoes becuase I don't have a lot of ground space.

we had a tiny 'yard' concrete square of a garden with a flat once... i had tons of containers and hanging baskets in it.. but ventured into potatoes one year.. in a dustbin! :) you know big plastic type.. had a great crop of spuds, was easy to earth up.. but a mess when we emptied it out to get the spuds! lol hubby literally up ended it!  :shock:
