carrots and compost
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:56 »
Hey guys. I've never had any success with carrots! I never grow them where manure has been, and i always grow the same few types. Early nantes, autum king 2 and flyaway. But they either fork really badly or are really stumpy. What im thinking of doing is preparing a carrot only bed. 2 parts soil, 2 parts sand and 1 part compost. What i want to know is, will the compost make them fork like manure does? Also, does anyone have any mixes of their own? Many thanks. Andy.

I grew mine in just home made compost, sand and leaf mould, no soil at all. After a slow start from a Feb sowing they produced a fab crop. I grew the small Red Chantenay.  The compost and leaf mould were put through my rotary sieve (Christmas pressie  :D )  I just made enough mixture to fill a small raised bed, made from a pallet top, about 5' x 4' approx.

Oh I did add a little gen purpose fertiliser a week or so before sowing but I don't think it's a necessity

Good luck  :D
