Non-Laying hens
« on: December 21, 2008, 15:23 »
I have 6 hens (3 Maran and 3 Light Sussex x) They are 30 weeks old and still no eggs. They are in an ark 6ft x 4ft with a similar sized run. I move the whole unit regularly to ensure new grass. Am I doing something wrong? :
If all else fails, read the instructions!

I'll move this to the hen house, rather than the welcome forum. It's more likely to be seen by the chicken people.

Please pop back here & introduce yourself.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi Bwlboy

Welcome to the Hen House :D

You might find that you don't get any eggs for another month or so
They lay better with more daylight hours, so it might be that the grotty winter days are stopping them :D

Do they have access to grit & oyster shell?
Also what are you feeding them :?

Sarah :D

Thanks for the input. I am feeding them standard Layers Pellets, which I understand contain grit. They will aslo be picking up grit when they are scratching in the run? Anyway, I will get some grit and ensure it is available for them. A pleniful supply of freah water is always available.

Hi Bwlboy and welcome to the forum

I have 3 Marans and 15 Light Sussexs hens which are 34 weeks old, so for 2 of the Marans are laying and half the Light Sussex, so you may have a few weeks to wait yet.

Have there combs started to grow yet, a few weeks before they are due to lay there combs start to grow and turn a bright red, and remember it is winter sometimes can take a bit to get going with the short number of daylight hours.

Hi Bwlboy and welcome  :)

When you say, they are in a 6x4ft run, are they let out at any time ?

That's way too small to keep 6 hens in, even moving it around. You should be aiming at a minimum of 1sq.metre per bird.
