Hello everyone, i am a newbie[ so please be nice to me], can i post my tuppence worth here, i may be wrong , but i thought the risk with cat litter trays was only if they had worms, so if they are wormed regular there isnt a problem?

                Kitkat
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Hi there, welcome,

I think...I may be wrong...but i think any cat can carry toxoplasmosis, even if it doesn't have worms.

It can also be found in soil, usually because a cat has pooped there at some point, (usually not your own cat either!)  which is why you should wear gloves when gardening.

Some people are naturally immune to it and you can get a blood test done to check.

mrs amc had a baby in October and I made sure I did the cat litter tray and not her. I have a few pullets ordered for spring (leaving it til then as baby rearing is hard work!) and if we have another baby then we'll keep the hens.

So, congratulations mr & mrs spadefighter! If the family are still "concerned" you can tell them that mrs spadefighter probably won't go near the hens if she gets morning sickness and at 7 months+ she won't be able to bend down to them even if she wanted too!

PS does anyone know when my baby girl can be weened onto chick crumb :?:  :!:  :)

Smoking a big cigar.

Toxoplasmosis is a seperate infection and can rarely cause problems with  tranmission to the unborn child. Wikipaedia has a pretty good summery if you are interested in more information.

It's actually a very common infection in that many people have been exposed and can carry the infection (a bit like cold sores) but it doesn't usually cause any problems. The usual precausions are obviously sensible.

a little bit of what you fancy does you good.

if we all did what we were supposed to... we'd starve and never leave the house.

my oldest sister smoked through both her pregnancies. both are well.  my nephew is 6'4 and absolutely gorgeous.

my middle sister never smoked.... her two both have asthma.

what will be will be, enjoy getting ready for your new bundle of joy and carry on living.

the stress of worrying about what you should or shouldnt do would do the baby more harm than the odd hug with your chooks.

congratulations

Anyone out there old enough to remember this one?

We four beatles of liverpool are
One in a taxi one in a car
Paul on a scooter tooting his hooter
Following Ringo Starr
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

Hiya!

Thought I would add my thoughts on the subject! I am currently 8 months pregnant and  have chooks which I have been in contact with ever since I was pregnant. The midwives know I have chickens (and love the free eggs may I add!) and have not mentioned any risks involved. Only thing anyone has ever told me is dont wash the eggs as that allows bacteria to get inside the egg which makes pregnant woment more prone to illness. (I've never washed an egg before anyhoo!) On the subject of eggs also, my chooks are immunised against Salmonella and I am still eating soft boiled aggs nearly every day to no ill effect.

When I was a few months pregnant my chook (now named Iris) Pecked me in the eye and I had to go to hospital to get it treated as it took a layer of skin off from my eye - even then the hospital weren't concerned about my contact with chickens so I really think there is no risk unless your wife gets random egg licking cravings?!

(my cravings are lobster, thai tom yam soup & ice lollies btw!! - not all together....however......must go try the concoction ;o) ) Good luck!

Dannii
