Oyster shells to Grit?
« on: December 05, 2008, 20:21 »
My dear wife suprised me with some oysters for dinner today which were yummy! I'm now left with a small pile of shells which I'm half thinking I'll try and turn into grit for my girls.
Except I'm not entirely sure how? I suppose I'll wash and crush them, but do I have to heat/bake them first?

Well grit and oyster shell are 2 different things!  The grit is to help them grind the food in their crop, and the oyster shell is to help give calcium to the egg shells forming inside them.

I've never done shell myself before, so I suppose you just bake them and grind them up, but a more knowledgeable person will be around soon!

Oysters eh???   Is your wife trying to tell you something????

Just be careful not to burn them as that will produce lime.

we just chuck them into the run whole! The chooks have a right laugh chucking them around and nibbling off the edges. ( I do put in broken up ones for them too) but they seem to enjoy the whole ones.

Interesting idea, Kiwi. I'll try a few whole shells in the run to see what happens.

Funny, I saw that episode of Sharpe too..

Grannie, I should be so lucky!
