Happy Turkey needed for Christmas....
« on: December 02, 2008, 23:27 »
OK peeps,

my problem is as follows....

I am a buddhist (no, that's not the problem - keep reading....stick with it) and as such I'm one of those weird vegetarian folks. However, I think beliefs should be discovered by people themselves so as a result I don't force it on my children or my Partner.

I'm divorced (Yay!!)  :D
but that means my kids don't live with me (Booo!!)
They're coming to stay with me over Christmas this year, first time in 5 years (Yay!!) :D
I've gotta serve them the traditional Turkey (Booo!!)

You may see the problem I have. My kids and Partner will all be expecting Turkey for Christmas dinner and, guess what, I do the cooking in this house!!

So, the best thing I can do is to source out a Turkey that has had a GOOD life, been treated well and basically was a happy free range bird.

Anyone on here keep turkeys to sell and live around Chesterfield/Sheffield/Derby? It doesn't have to be a big bird - just has to be happy - that way I say less mantra's seeking forgiveness

Cheers folks!

Also try your local butchers, ours does only free range chicken and turkeys.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Thanks guys,

I do have a local butcher but thought I'd ask on here for 2 reasons. Firstly, I'd rather give my money to someone on here and secondly I don't really relish the idea of heading into a shop full of animal flesh....the smell makes me retch - how soppy is THAT! lmao!!

If there's no joy on here, I'll bite the bullet and head down there.

when in Rome!
i think that regarding your beliefs and if you invited your partner and your children to your house, then they shouldn't really mind not eating the traditional Christmas turkey, what would you have eaten if they weren't coming? they could still have all the trimmings (except maybe pigs in blankets) chrismas is about being together and not what you eat (i will of course be sitting down to turkey) but if i had been invited for Christmas dinner, i wouldn't want my host to serve something he wasn't happy about cooking and eating, after all it's your Christmas dinner too.

Yeah, but more importantly to me is that the children are seek their own beliefs - I am merely an example. They may agree or they may not? but the fact they have the freedom to choose is important. My partner actually lives with me (we have a child together) so it's her house as well. Although she would happily not have Turkey!!  :D

i agree with too many girls....and if your partner is happy not to have turkey perhaps you could put it to your kids that they have whatever you would have had if they werent coming. i'm sure they'll have plenty of other opportunities to eat turkey over Christmas. Or what about buying sliced ready cooked turkey if they insist? at least you wont have to handle /cook it! and that leaves one less turkey for the chop
