Manure ......
« on: November 28, 2008, 18:33 »
I have a question and would appreciate some opinions or advice .....

I have read the information elsewhere on the site about manure .... very interesting and not a load of s**t!!

In terms of nitrogen content, horse manure seems better that farmyard stuff, so my question is, would I be better to use horse manure? the bonus is, I live not that far from stables so could get a plentyful supply!

Your thoughts, views and opinions welcome!   :D

Six and two three's really.. both add bulk to the soil aswell as nutrients.. but I'm not sure if one is better than the other... I'm sure someone will be along soon with the scientific answer  :)

If you can easily get hold of horse muck then that's best.

If you can easily get hold of cow muck, then that's best! (IMHO  )
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Farm manure can be ordered and delivered from a reputable supplier. Having said that, I saw the size of some of the piles today ..... very daunting!

On the other hand, I can go to the stables with my trailer and bulk bag and get what I need ...... although a few trips may be needed.

Who'd have thought that a pile of poo could be so confusing!!

How big is your lottie.. I can get a full trailer load in mine with some spare? Depends how much you want to bulk up the soil I guess?

Horse manure is good. What you are looking for is the urine-soaked straw. This will rot down in a few months to give you a lovely pile of compost.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

To resurect this thread, I have had the big pile of cow poo delivered!

After a long day, it is now spread all over the plot, of which all of it will hopefully be used this year.

My question is, and this will sound really daft, when do I dig it all again?

Can I do bits at a time or do I need to do the whole plot?

 :)

How fresh was it?  If it's rotting down nicely, the worms should bury it for you, and you can turn in any bits they've missed as you're preparing each bed.  If it isn't well-rotted, then you need to pray for good weather, or it'll scorch any plant you put into it in the next 4 months or so.

Some of it was so fresh, there was a cow in it!

The chap that delivered it supplies to the whole site and there was a bit of a mix of fresh and some rotted. It looks like it's drying and rotting down and we turned it over last weekend.

That was a lot of trouble just to resurrect a thread. ;)  :tongue2:  ::)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
