If you haven't got a slow cooker yet

This is it. I just put it in the slow cooker. Lovely in the oven though

2 lb (1 kg) red cabbage
1 lb (450 g) cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped small
1 lb (450 g) onions, chopped small
1 clove garlic, chopped very small
¼ whole nutmeg, freshly grated
¼ level teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ level teaspoon ground cloves
3 level tablespoons brown sugar
3 tablespoons wine vinegar
½ oz (15 g) butter
salt and freshly milled black pepper

Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 2, 300°F (150°C).

First discard the tough outer leaves of the cabbage, cut it into quarters and remove the hard stalk. Then shred the rest of the cabbage finely, using your sharpest knife (although you can shred it in a food processor, I prefer to do it by hand: it doesn't come out so uniform). Next, in a fairly large casserole, arrange a layer of shredded cabbage seasoned with salt and pepper, then a layer of chopped onions and apples with a sprinkling of garlic, spices and sugar. Continue with these alternate layers until everything is in.
Now pour in the wine vinegar, lastly add dots of butter on the top. Put a tight lid on the casserole and let it cook very slowly in the oven for 2-2½ hours, stirring everything around once or twice during the cooking. Red cabbage, once cooked, will keep warm without coming to any harm, and it will also re-heat very successfully. And, yes, it does freeze well

Very tempted to buy this for my mother as a present (also bought a blender this year). Not as a Christmas present just something useful for her to cook with. Evil eh? :D

If she doesn't have a lot of people to feed she will probably find a smaller one more useful, it is big and quite heavy.

Well, I've bought one. Can't see if they give you a book or not (can't really unpack it at work).
Anyone else got any hints and tips? I envisage myself tipping some things out of the fridge into it in the morning and returning from work in the evening to a lovely meal and much congratulation on being a domestic goddess.
So I may need some help.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Shall I assume it was an 'in-store deal' as I am on their website now and their cheapest one is £19.96.

Thanks, CQ

Interesting that it uses garlic, and does it matter whether it's red or white wine vinegar?

May well try that out on my first red cabbage from the plot
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Not in store either - I sent OH shopping last night (Abingdon) in hopes of an early Christmas pressy

Maybe @ a bigger superstore?

Ours isn't a big store but I'll check when I shop tomorrow. Hope they haven't all gone.

They came in, they went out - with the last one in the store disappearing into the depths of my trolley at the weekend.   While ignoring the dagger like looks being aimed at me .....

Cooked a pheasant from the market in it with little onions and some mushrooms in a red wine (basically a Bourguignon) sauce with added crushed juniper berries.  Mmmmmm....  One little bird left 4 people very happy and full ... without costing a fiver!

That cooker is going to be working for its living! :D

I got my slow cooker after reading the positives about them on here.  Haven't looked back.  Bit light on recipes (any ideas!!) but a basic stew always goes down well at the end of the day.  Also, cooked my Christmas ham in there and it was delicious!

Book shelves in charity shops ... amazing what you find!  sometimes you have to update a bit (veg oil instead of lashings of bacon fat, reduce the salt) but for 50p you get a lot of good ideas.

(I'm  a sucker for homeless cookery books ... )
