What winter stuff are you folks growing ?
« on: November 24, 2008, 17:32 »
Just wondered what people were growing at the moment.

I've for sprouts, leeks, kales of various types, hungry gap, sorrel, everlasting spinach, beets Jersulum artichokes, caulis, peas, chard, brocs, italian cally, rocket either growing for over winter or ready to eat at the moment. Plus toms, peppers, samphire and tomitillos in the hydroponics units and spuds in the Orangry for Christmas (but they do look a bit sad ) Once the horse poo is steaming I want to start a hot bed for early carrots

:?:  to plant the carrots in, or use as a heat source?  Seems to go against the carrots should go in soil with low nitrogen theme!

So far I have:

leeks
swede
kale
cabbage (I think    not checked for a while)
brussels
celeriac
over wintering onions
garlic
broadbeans to plant out (outside in modules atm)
Jerusalem artichokes & chinese artichokes in individual pots to plant out later
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

Cabbages and swedes still going with garlic and winter onions planted start of the month.

I filled the plot with things that the family enjoyed earlier in the year and they are not into cabbage, swede or brussel sprouts or other winter greens. So I've got just enough for me at the moment.

I have just taken my plot on and managed to get in over-wintered onions, broad bean "aquadulce", pea feltham first and garlic early purple wight.

The last incumbent had a small bed of sprouts which I covered in a pile of horse manure and staked in the hope that they may bulk up for Christmas dinner.

I hope there is enough for 4!

Use as a heat source, the Victorians used hott beds to grow out of season, the heats lasts 10-12 weeks heat source of steaming poo underneath, cold frame above. soil in the middle as required for growing your choice of veg
