Manure in potato bed?
« on: November 24, 2008, 12:01 »
I was digging in some horse-muck at the weekend, I was planning to plant my potatoes in this particular bed next spring. A neighbouring plot holder commented that I shouldn’t plant potatoes in a bed that has had manure dug-in. My Allotment Book tells me something different.

Who's correct?

Will next Spring’s spuds benefit from my work over the weekend?
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

well I planted spuds in pure shoite when I had nothing done on my plot when I first got it.  I got plenty of spuds but they were scabby cos of the muck, but they were absolutely fine.  I did Desiree and Cara

Scab is not a problem unless you plan to enter them into a show  :D

Hi Sideways... last year I covered  the tat bed to be with horse muck,
dug it in early jan'feb , planted said tats, had great crops,
no problems at all.
Doing exactly the same this year.
Bye PAH :) 'in

I plant the horse muck at the same time as the spuds.

Don't have a problem.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They were fine,

The poo, (Pooh is a bear BTW!), is quite well gone when delivered by a neighbour who owns horses, but I keep it for another 2 years before using.

I've got 3 piles which I use in rotation.

Thanks all.

I will go ahead as planned. I have two beds for spuds, I think I will leave out the muck on the second bed and see which one performs best.

I think you are mistaking the cause of scab, I've always understood it to be fresh lime.

I've just discovered that there's no apostrophe on the laptop keyboard.
Marvellous! the website seems to have
corrected it.
