Calling Onion Experts..what's this ??
« on: November 23, 2008, 15:15 »
I'm having a problem with some of my Exhibition Onion seedlings.

The top 1 cm ,no more, of some is just shrivelling up.

I am at a loss as to what it is that's happening.

I'm growing them indoors under lights in a well ventilated space so I dont think it's a fungal problem, and it is only affecting some, and only the top inch of the leaf ??

It's not travelling down the leaf but just affecting the top inch ?

Anyone got any ideas ?

Cheers. :(

Oh dear, I thought you were the onion expert

Hope there's someone out there that can help (obviously not me).

I'm no onion expert, but they are not to close to the lights are they?
Life is a heap of manure. Growing one minute, stinking the next.

I don't think so as I'm using those CFL low energy cool lights which are designed to be used almost on top of plants, and as you can see there is a taller leaf next to the affected one that's fine.

I'm completely baffled. :?

I'm sorry to hear Dan.

I'm not enough of an expert with things like this but could it be a lack of nitrogen ?

Did you have something on your hand when you transplanted them?

It looks like a mould if so it could be downy mildew if so spray with diathane could be caused by bad drainage

I forgot to say that they are seedlings grown from onion "pips"

Although they might look big on the photo they're just tiny seedlings,4 inches tall max,and just in 4 inch pots of compost.

The compost is just slightly moist,so It's not waterlogged, and the damage hasn't travelled any further down the leaf,It just seems to affect the top cm or so, then it shrivells up and stops. :?

I might give them a blast with Dithane as you suggest just to be on the safe side though. :(
