Polish head lice...
« on: November 19, 2008, 21:56 »
 Am embarrassed to find one of my polands has a head lice infestation (i think anyway - she had them when I got her from a friend and i thought they'd gone)... she has loads of caked brown dust but I can't see any crawlies.  Have had a go with the flea spray and loads of feathers came out.  Are there any less brutal means of controlling these critters?  Can anyone offer head lice related advice please??  All suggestions gratefully received!!

Am planning to give her a little haircut tomorrow to try and get the lice/ dirt away from her eyes.

Eugh...

Oh no  Sorry to hear that Sarah :(

I'm  just starting out with Polands got two 4 week ish olds :) I had read they could be a problem :(

Have just read this :  mix insecticidal powder with Vaseline &rub it on to each birds head & neck. since no insecticide kills nits repeat the treatment twice at 7 day intervals - taken from Chicken Health Handbook by G Damerow

frontline for cats. 2 drops on the back of the neck.

works wonders.

Thanks all

Have got cage bird flea stuff (like cat frontline) suitable for large birds up to 1.5kg and put that on all 3 polands and I've also rubbed flea spray into the head feathers of the one who's got the infestation.  I will be keeping a close eye on her because I have read head lice can cause eye damage if left untreated.

Fingers crossed  :)
