Allotment next to railway track
« on: November 17, 2008, 16:07 »
Hello All again,

What problems can I expect from a patch thats adjactant to railway track ?

I know that the brambles and their roots will creep thru, (going to dig a deep trench) to hopefully stop this.

My neighbour (Pete C) told me that Railtrack use a plant (can't remember its name) to hold the banks together.

Brambles spread by seed and shoot tips rooting when they touch the ground, rather than by the roots so I don't think digging a trench will help. Most things that spread by roots, can be kept at bay by regular 'edging'. (Like you do for lawn edges.)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

If you're really close to the railway, I'd be careful about checking how close to your plot any weedkiller spraying on the railway (if any) will be.  They won't wait for a windless day before doing it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Don't think you'll have any problems being next to BR. I'm next to one where I am, and it actually helps. It helps to deter undesirables from that side, and train workings won't hurt at all. think you'll find they are quite a way back from your plot. Only bankside scrub to worry about. (and believe me, I know) and thats easily managable. I think you'll be alright with the weed kill spray, tends to be low down and doesn't spread far but a good point from Yorkie and he's got loads of railway around him. (and I know them) all in all no probs.

Err getting back to the question - you'll probably have a fox family living nearby. Not necessarily a problem but they do like to play with the fleece.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Fleece just does not last on my plot, there's a den not far and they rip it to shreds after a week or so (if your lucky)
