Potato Question
« on: November 16, 2008, 08:39 »
Have read in a book that if you have overgrown ground to clear you can cover with black mesh, cut slits in it and plant potatoes through the slits!!
Is this true?
Will the potatoes have enough room to grow through slits?
It just seems to easy to clear overgrown ground like this
many thanks

I am sure the potatoes would grow but I'm not to sure if that is the best  way to clear overgrown areas.

wouldn't take long for the brambles to find a way through the slits I reckon, and the bindweed :)

I'v read about the method where you use the same sort of mesh/membrane as you would for strawberries and cut the slits in for the spud plants to come through but it was used as a way of not having to earth up.

The ground had been prepared before hand as any weeds would just come through the slits if it wasn't dug and cleared first.

Hi , I think one problem with this technique is the lack of water getting to the root system through just a slit in the membrane, Apart from that its a great idea to save on heaping the soil to cover any potatoes that show on the surface
I was going to test this way of growing next year so we will see.
