Seeweed ?
« on: November 12, 2008, 04:12 »
Hi,
After all of the rough weather of the past few days, a lot of seeweed has been washed-up on the local beaches. Any advice on the do's and dont's of using seeweed on the garden would be welcome.

we use seaweed as fertilizer, we have this huge tank thing and bung in a load of seaweed then top up with water. Let it all do it's thing then after about 2 months it's ready to use ( it will look brown) - it will be very concentrated so water it down ( half and half)  we just fill the watering can with it and bobs your uncle!

I gather bags and bags of the stuff. Some I dig direct into the ground and the rest is added to the compost bins.

I use it quite a bit as well, again after storms I nip down and get a few bags, I tend to give it a wash before composting just to get rid any excess salt.

I gather it by the sack load, put it on the lawn, hose it down with water, let it dry then run over it with the lawn mower with the collectuion bag on. the lawn mower breaks it up realy well. I then use it as a mulch. Great stuff :D

Did not know how to use it but do now. Will be down the beach this weekend to get some. Will put some in the compost and fill a water barrel up.

I take it that all seaweed is good?
Even the grubby black/green stuff that gets washed up on the tidal Thames in Essex.
