Afraid I can't answer the specific questions but make sure you either have space for it to become rampant, or you get a variety that doesn't try to take over...!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi, I have several bamboo in my garden, but from a previous experience, I only grow them in containers.  They might get off better if you wait till early spring.  (see if you can find somebody who is dividing a plant).
When it is established,  cut off all the growth  on the stems to about 1/3rd
that will reveal your beautiful stems and make a wonderful specimen.
You will have to divide it about every 3rd year, so you will need to take it out of the pot/tub and literally saw it into the size you want to repot.  It may sound like hard work, but believe me, it will be much easier than a garden completely overun.  Good Luck.  Mrs Bouquet

Have a read of this place:
http://www.fulbrooke.co.uk/
In a small place near to Newmarket.

I bought 4 bamboos from them some years back, good prices and good plants. One of the species I bought was Fargesia murielae. Another was of the Fargesia species also. I bought two of one type and one of another. The fourth was the black bamboo.

The two of the same type have sort of given up, grew well for 5-6 years, flowered and stopped. The other bamboos are going fine.

All are clumb forming and after 5-6 years none have done anything other then stay in a clumb.

Concerning soil, didn't really expect them to grow well as the soil I have them in is not great and can dry out, heavy. Mulch it as oftan as I can remember to. If they are surviving with me then should make it almost anywhere.

check this site out;

  http://www.hardybamboo.com/

  We have a few 'boos in the garden and has been mentioned you have to keep an eye on them as they do go 'walkies'.
  To be honest i would wait until spring now,bamboos are very hardy but i don't think they would like going in cold ground.
Once upon a time I could control myself
