frost resistant lettuce ??
« on: November 07, 2008, 11:12 »
Feeling pretty smug right  now
At the first mention of frost a couple of weeks ago, I gathered in the remaining lettuce plants I had growing in the open, and made soup from them (don't knock it until you've tried it  :) ) thinking all I'd  have left would be slimy black stuff.

Well.........   there's been several frosts since then, and my lettuce is stilll thriving      I  have little gem and assorted red/green stuff, pretty frilly leaves etc.,  (sorry can't remember what I sowed!)  but I'm still cutting lettuce almost every day for salads.

It was just ordinary lettuce seeds, nothing that said it would stand frost, low temperatures etc.,  so am feeling pretty pleased right now  :D

I find little gems quite hardy, there is the winter version of it too which i believe is better.

I know what you mean.

I've still got a few small little gem and some lollo rosso which have been through a few frosts and don't seem to have been harmed at all. :?

I even had about half an inch of ice on my water butts last week too so It's been damn cold. :)
