Peas
« on: November 05, 2008, 23:02 »
I was contemplating planting some peas but I don't have a massive amount of space. How many peas do you get per plant or how many plants to make a meal? It seems a bit pointless if I just end up with a teaspoon full to eat

Thanks
Tam

DD is our resident pea expert, but I grow Alderman peas which grow up canes to a height of 6ft, you could grow them in a pot with a wigwam of canes!!!

I think it depends on the variety. I grow Kelvedon Wonder and Onward (early and maincrop). I have various raised beds at different sizes and found in a space 5' by 5', I had enough plants that gave enough yeild of peas to :

not reach the kitchen (pod to stomach)
Just about reach the kitchen (shelled and eaten in under 2 hours)
and enough to shell and freeze to feed 2 people

This should be ample for you

Planted in a triple row like this:

it is reckoned that you should get 1lb of peas to each foot of row.

If space is at a premium, then it's a good idea to go upwards as GA suggested.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well I guess even if we eat them off the plants thats still tasty

I've got a trellace fence panel about 6'x6' and two big tubs that are about 2.5' at the widest point... they have a ginko tree in the middle but lots of room underneath as they don't get very thick. I could do tall peas on the trellace and short peas in the tubs :D Might just get us enough for a meal :D

Has anyone tried 'Carouby de Mausanne' mange tout? They sounded nice with the pretty flowers as well as edible. Everything's is going in the garden so its nice if it looks good too.
