There is far too much common-sense being talked here.  I reckon mum2many wants justification and enthusiasm before common sense.

I don't know anyone who keeps chickens who throws out the eggs.  They sell them, they barter them for baking / jams / whatever.  Do you think muntjac eats 1/4 acre of asparagus every year, or that I eat 300kg of garlic?

Go for it mum2many.  You can grow kale, leaf beet and grazing rye to feed the chickens.  You can grow comfrey or green manure on areas that you don't have time to tend.

I don't do chicken-math.  How much land would you reckon you'd need to keep 12 chickens and grow all their own food?

well took the 3 plots on  , seems there are more free than I thought so they are glad to have 3 being put to use.

The only thing is they are being rotavated today and from reading Johns Diaries etc it seems that was the wrong thing to do.

What should I/we be doing this weekend with them?

rake them level and then pull any weds and other urubbish out ,.tidy up the edges by leaving a gutter around the plot ,then start thinking about what your planting ,where your bins for compost are going to be ,look at getting the shed and any other stuff sorted ,then start loking for bits for cloches etc
start planting out next month

Totally agree, I've wasted so much work through changing my mind.

I like to call it Objective Oriented gardening - think about what you want to achieve before you buy any seeds.  Seed packets, you see, will actually speak to you on sunny days.  "Plant me, plant me", they'll say even when neither your plot nor the weather is really ready.

Since you've taken the plunge on all 3 plots, maybe you can look towards saving yourself quite a bit on food for the chickens.
