Compost heaps on the plot
« on: November 02, 2008, 16:29 »
Just wondered if many people recycle their kitchen waste by saving it up and taking it down to the allotment heap?  I used to compost everything at home, but rats just loved the warm cosiness of my compost, so it all goes into the council recycling bin now - but I can't help feeling its a waste.  I wonder if anyone else keeps a big bucket at home, and empties it down the plot a couple times a week?  It will take some persuading of the other half to allow a bucket of food scraps to remain unemptied for a few days tho ... but I think its worth it.

I don't, but only because I have a wormery at home and it all goes in that. Other plot holders do though and I recently saw some lovely compost one of them had when they emptied their bin. He takes a bucket of peelings down every week and puts it in his compost.

My composter at the allotment (made from pallets) just gets the outer leaves of veg, discarded growth and garden cuttings from home.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

I take all our veg scraps from home and all the teabags, apple cores etc from work. It means the car smells a bit vegetably sometimes but I can keep the stuff from home in bags on our balcony. Werks fer me
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Our council subsidised buckets with lids and handles as well as compost bins. Perhaps something like that that is sealed and neat looking would go down better?

Well sounds like its quite a common thing then.  Just a brief query - what's a dalek, and what does BTW mean?  I've never been good on abbreviations!

BTW = by the way!

Dalek I imagine is one of the big black compost bins that you regularly see.  I have one which I got subsidised from my local council.

I save most things at home and put it into a 'compost caddy' then take to the plot when I visit.
