What is this chicken?
« on: October 26, 2008, 14:38 »
Yesterday I got back home to see a new bird in my run. It turns out is was given to my local village butcher to bump off and eat, but the butcher was not willing to do this as he is not licenced to slaughter. The chicken was left with him anyway, and he visited yesterday and left it with my husband.

It's a very pretty bird, but I am not sure whether it is a girl or boy, how old it is, or even what breed it is. I think it is a barred wyandotte - it has a small rose comb, large wattles, yellow legs, but it's not obvious to my inexperienced eye what it is! So here are piccies;

And yes, I know someone is going to comment on the chicken wire - it is round my whole stable yard area where the chickens are during the day, and they feel cross about only having a fifth of an acre to run around in. They are spoilt! I can't afford to fence that much in with 6' weldmesh, so I run the foxy gauntlet.

ooooh lucky you!

whatever it is, it looks nice and from its shape i would guess its a hen....although why someone would want it culled if it is i cant imagine!

it looks a bit like my barred plymouth rock, but mine is only young so i'm not sure about the comb and wattles cos pearl's arn't developed yet.

He's a boy you know. :lol:

I once went to feed my chickens and some lousy person had abandoned half a dozen young cocks in the yard. For a moment, I thought that my memory was going. " I don't remember seeing those before" I thought. :lol:

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.
