OK to sow leeks under cover?

Got some Musselburgh leek seeds and was wondering if these will do ok if I sow them now and put in the growhouse.  These are a supposedly hardy variety, any opinions or do I just give them a go :D

Personally I wouldn't get too eager, spring sown ones will soon catch up & you won't have to look after them all winter.

But don't let me stop you!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm new to this business so any advice is taken on board, I'll save a little space for a few to go under cover, save the rest for the spring, see how we go.  Love my leeks and can't wait to sample some home grown efforts :D

I don't think they're sown now. Check on the packet for sowing times but I think it's not now. Hate you to waste them  :)

Leeks have areally long growing season and carrots are faster and those sown now would only be ready in april.I sow leeks in march and plant out june/july and they will be ready in jan /feb/march,maybe some nice small ones for Christmas. These are all musselborough,I`ve trid others but these are good and reliable.Be patient and grow good leeks next year.

Leeks have a natural growth cycle of two years. The seed germinates in the spring and grows all summer. It then over winters (unless we eat it) and resumes growing the following spring and runs to seed during its second summer.
The problem for us gardeners is that if we sow too early the Leek plant gets confused and this winter will trigger it into setting seed in the first year of its growth. So there is nothing to be gained by sowing before next spring.
Hope this makes sense.

I'm not sure what to compare them with, they are much larger than carrot seed & bit larger than brassica seed. It quite easy just to pick one up from a flat surface, or even your palm.
