Are these Quinces?
« on: October 22, 2008, 21:37 »
The descriptions and photos of quinces I have seen describe a small yellow fragrant fruit which is almost pear shaped.  I have pick what I have been told are quinces although they are small round green fruit.  They are fragrant (very) and the blossom did look similar to quince blosson.  Any ideas?

Can you post a photo?  That might help someone give a positive ID.

Quinces have really, really hard outside skins, especially if unripe (green), when they are ripe they are yellow and a bit speckly.  Delish as jam or jelly, once made quince wine but was very sweet.... treat as plums!

They could be japanese (ornamental) quince. We have one that has crab apple like fruits that are treated similar to true quince.

As said, very hard and ripen very late when fragrant.

Acid or sweet quince. Are the sweet quinces as good?
