Dooh! I just wanted to say roots needed planting at week moon.

Shall not say that now. :D

Anyhoo, I do get PMT regularly, can get really uptight about anything then, potatoes, usually spread out as said, but as Digger jokes it doesn't necessarily matter a thing. Earlies are earlies as they are faster, so even if you planted all at the same time, they shall come sooner. When the weather and you are ready will do.

Getting back to the original poster's question :D

Dr Hessayon's Vegetable and Herb Expert says:-

First Early - Plant in late March; a week or two earlier in southerly areas and a couple of weeks later in the north. Harvest in June or July.

Second Early - Plant in early to mid April and lift in July or August

Maincrop - Plant in mid to late April. Some of the tubers can be lifted in August for immediate use but potatoes for storage should be harvested in September or October.

However, they won't grow if the soil is less than 10 degrees C, so if its very cold in late March then you will need to wait. I'm told that when you see wormcasts on the soil then it's warm enough.

Thanks for that,its quite useful

It's completely useless, my friend, I'm afraid to say. :x

If I were to harvest my second earlies in July and August, I'd be fu**** to blight of nothing.

Also do harvest me early main crop in June, etc. 8)

When the weather is right G, I can't be too much more specific as the weather is not.

It be sometime in March and April, as the weather and soil goes, I'm afraid.

It gots to be be dry and warm enough.

How do you tell if the soil is warm enough to plant potatoes?

Well, according to the old boys on the Fens in these parts you go to the middle of your plot, drop your trousers and sit on the earth for 10 minutes.

If you cannot sit there for 10 minutes it aint warm enough

You cannot cover the whole of the UK with a carte blache date, you have to allow for regional variations.

End of February is WAY to early for us. That's just asking for it!
