 can anyone tell me the difference between waxed and unwaxed lemons

They are waxed purely to prolong shelf life :(

Waxed appear shinier and smoother than unwaxed lemons.
Wax is meant to preserve the freshness of the skin, and the lemon juice is used.
Unwaxed are for garnishes, slicing, grated.
Wax can be removed with hot water and a quick scrub.
Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else.

Unwax them under hot running water, but better still buy unwaxed if you can.
Cheese makes everything better.
