I reckon before the end of October.

I'm a bit behind this year & only got mine today, but the nursery had stacks, so it can't be too late yet!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD,which nursery did you use for your garlic and shallot's as I'v only been able to find Japanese onions locally and that was on Loughborough market. :?

Brookside Nurseries
Cropston Road
Anstey

They'd only got that tasteless elephant garlic, so I'll use some of my own, (again!).

They'd got a big box full of white onions & loads of packets of different varieties including red ones.

To the original question, it's encreasingly hard to say, the weather is haphazard and more and more so. I suppose on avrage, you are fine till nov or even Christmas.

But the best advice I've ever heard about autumn planting is that from C Fowley, space and do several dates, so can't get cought out by the weather. 8)   I'm afraid, I do believe, that's the best and most sound advice.

new_2_veg,

Try planting your onions and garlic on the day of the last full moon of the year.
This year that will be December 12th.

Believe me, and all those magical mystery planters over the last few hundred years, that will guarantee a successful crop.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.
