Was this a bad year for bolting?
« on: October 14, 2008, 11:37 »
Hi
I've grown onions and leeks before usually quite successfully but this year in the new raised beds we had made I put some red onion sets, some white onion sets and 2 different kinds of leeks in.  The red onions almost all bolted and those that didn't were very small.  The white onions were a mixed bunch, some bolting, some got huge.  The leeks were also mixed but a good proportion of them just grew woody and bolted straight away.  Is this due to weather or some other stress?  Could it be lack of sun?  I will try another bed that gets a bit more sun next year.

Ditto.... well only a few of my red onions did but they have a habit of it anyway. Boc and fennel... useless.

We have had a good year with onions as none of them bolted - even the red ones behaved themselves. The leeks are looking good at the moment.

same with my red onions, they threatened bolting and formed smallish onions...

the 'allotment bore' informed me that red onions are prone to doing this

It would probably be easier for me to say what didn't bolt! Been a bad year for onions for me, nearly all my reds bolted  :(
Along with PSB, calabrese, rocket, lettuce, blah blah blah.

At least the bees and insects had a good feed so someone was happy!

All but my last crop of lettuce bolted, my handful of onions did not. I encountered that my mixed leaf lettuce in the mini greenhouse bolts as soon as it is put in it seems!

A couple of chard, celery, celeriac & bulb fennel bolted, but the rest are fine (did not grow psb this year, and was late with the brussels and they are a bit on the small size - think I'll be having pea size sprouts for Christmas   )

This season has been the best this century for onions for me, not a single red bolted and only 2 yellows did so.

Lettuce was mixed, italian cos and little gem were fine, mizuna lasted a good time before bolting, but red bolted straight away.

No problems with any brassica

But as usual the spinach, rocket and basil all bolted.
