some of youwho read my posts may see me taklking about making up me  own fertiliswer or reinvigorating old compost . the thing is its only old because the fertiliser will have been used up in it . so here is my mix for making my fertiliser for feeding to all my plants on the plot. as i said its my mix if you dont want to use it as it stands feel free to add or subtract what ya wanna   oh n its in blooming ounces etc cos i dont do blooming metric
30 oz of sulphate of ammonia
 42 oz of superphosphate
12 oz of sulphate of potash
and 10 oz of bone meal
make sure ya mix them dry or the wieghts come out different
this is enough for about 30sq yards if ya gardens smaller make the mix up n save some till winter or spring ....if its bigger make more . oh n its about a tuna flake tin to the sq yard

One way to recycle compost organically is to add it, in thin layers, to worm beds.  The worms will mix it up for you when you add other layers (thin ones) of kitchen waste, horse muck (over 3 months old), lime, egg shells.

If you prefer, you can do the mixing by blending old compost with new completed vermicompost and liquor from the worm bed/box.

The bonemeal from MJ's recipe is okay in an organic system.  Don't think the others are though.

comp bins

hi bridgeford
Old doors make fantastic compost bins. better still if you can get a fifth one and put it down the middle to make 2 bins.  Then when one is full cover it with old carpet, weight it down with wood or any rubbish and leave it for several months while filling the other one.  Ie. a rotation system
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

Worm composting is about creating a layer of food in which the worms live.  Don't create a volume of material all at once; it'll either heat up and kill the worms, or turn anaerobic and kill the worms.

Have a look at http://www.worms.com or search Google

I may be on my own here but in the 8 years I've had my plot, with the exception of liquid seaweed and a concoction made with my own comfrey leaves used in the greenhouse, I've not used any fertilisers at all.

To all those new to growing veg, I would see what crops you get without them before splashing out good money which could be spent better elsewhere.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Can't go on like that forever milkman - see Shaun's signature "feed the soil not the plants".

Your soil is a bank account of fertility and you might just be headed for an overdraft!

Ah but that's my point - I feed the soil with as much compost as I can, not the plants with the application of artificial fertilisers....

Ah good, then we are singing off the same hymn sheet.

You didn't mention compost at all so the point you were making was entirely implied.    :D  :D

Naw, if milkman was coming to get me, he'd be about half way when he reached the Scottish border!

Anyways - us organic folks stick together.  :D
