If it's under 600g it won't survive with or without straw and a heater.

It'll need to be taken indoors to be fed throughout winter. It won't hibernate and will need a bit of space for moving around.

I would suggest one of the volunteers would be its best hope. They should be able to come out to collect, or could you ask someone else to drop it off if they go anywhere near ?

They also get infested with fly eggs which become maggots and burrow into them. They take a lot of lookign after.

This hedgie is way too small to survive at this size, I agree with aunt sally it should be at least 600g to be able to hibernate safely. You can feed cat food but is should be chicken if poss, definatley not fish flavors. Kitten food is better As it is really small as it will struggle to digest some food properly. make sure it has plenty of water available too or it will get dehydrated and die.
As its so small it would be much kinder to get the hedgehog rescue to take it in and care for it over the winter though
good luck

would suggest saucer of water or cat food a few inches from the nest and a pait of thick gloves.

Once it tucks in, grab it and pop in a box with air slits and straw/newspaper in bottom.

Then keep it fed and watered until collected.

Sounds easy

I would do as Rob suggests

Put the food just far enough away, what ever you do you are going to have to be out after dark :)

Although hedgehogs can run (very quickly when they want   ) It's instinct will tell it to roll up, so once it's out of the hole it SHOULD be easily caught.

If you contact the people Foxy suggested they will have ways of catching them and might even come out and do the job for you, or lend you the equipment :)

If this hedgehog is as small as you say it really does need help asap :D

If you need to check it over, you can place it on a towel on your lap and gently rock it with your knees. Its curiosity will make it unroll to see what's going on.

A tip from our local hedgehog lady  :)  (...and it works)

Hi NP,  Glad it wasnt a rat.

Dont be scared to catch him, spines would only hurt if you really grabbed it and there is no need to do that, you could pick it up gently probably by dropping a tea towel or something light over it, hedgehogs are really cute and friendly.  I used to look out of bedroom window when I was a little girl and spot them in the garden, I would then run out in barefeet and take it into the lounge to show my mum and dad!  They obviously had to discourage this behaviour because of the fleas which your little friend will undoubtedly be covered with!  Certainly easier than catching a chicken.

The others are def right he will take alot of looking after and it is probably in his best interests to go to the experts, he will have some prickly companions there too.   :D

I'd be more concerned about fleas than its spines! Long sleeves AND gloves!
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Their claws can be pretty mean too. And what about those huge teeth and the orange and black stripes

....oh no, that's a tiger

But they do have long claws
