This is our big Faverolle who is nearly featherless and now the weather is getting quite chilly I am worried she will get cold. When the new feather pins are pushing through full of blood they look so painful ............ouch!

That's horrible! Why would anyone do that? Its like people who breed cats without fur!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I always thought that a fast moult was a sign of a healthy, strong bird, as opposed to a slow moult which used to indicate a poor layer. Birds which moult quickly usually get back to the business of laying quicker too.
It does look awful though.....

Hi,  Kim t ,     I'm new to the hen house and was looking for advice when i saw your photos, thank you so much for these as one of my girls Poppy looks the same and i was getting really worriedabout her.  My girls are about 2years old and didnt moult this much last year  so its good to know that she is ok!   Jenny looks fine so i couldnt work out why only one of them was turning into a hedgehog!  Thanks again for the help everyone,  from turnip.

Our hens are still moulting- the older ones anyway.  Yesterday I thought one ws bleeding- it was just the new feathers coming through.  I´ll be glad when they go back to laying properly- we´ve had them on strike now for 2 months thereabouts :(

ps Aunt Sally, your naked hen looks like the ´Rooster of Morón de la Frontera´

Hi Turnip and welcome.

I'm glad the pictures helped but last year she didn't moult anywhere near as bad as this year hence the pic's - they can look truely dreadful when it's a heavy moult.
