Newbie to Veg growing
« on: February 11, 2007, 19:26 »
I am planning on trying to grow my own veg this year and found this excellent site!

I really need direction on how to start, and whether my plans (if you can call them that!) are realistic!

I have no greenhouse, and will not be able to have one either.  I have a small plot in back garden, which is east facing.  No idea of soil - how do I determine that?  Thought I could maybe boost space with pots/growbags?

Veg that I thought I would like to start with (in no particular order) : garlic, swede, potatos, peas, beetroot and sweetcorn.

Is that too many?  Saw the veg seeds pages so will browse through that next.  No idea when to start what veg, what can be grown together etc.

In other words, I dont know anything!!!!!  I have grown plants before, just not veg!

Found other sites but they tend be telling you what to do in greenhouse etc.  Need real pepole to tell me what to do and when!  A starting point would be really helpful from you and I would be grateful!!

Hi Shelle & welcome
Your selection of veg all look fine except the swede as they tend to be grown as a field crop and may take up more room than they are worth.
As for your soil a quick guide would be to pick up a small handful and squeeze it together  in your hand if it stays in the same shape when you unclench your hand it's probably clay, if it just crumbles back then it's sandy,
If you gardens really small you may want to look at  this website for ideas American site but translates well to UK use.
Keep firing the questions, and as munty says just how much of your garden you want to use.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Heck! replies already!

Will look tomorrow in daylight after work to see how much space and what soil is like to start answering your questions.

It is so much better when real people help out!  Thanks!!!

To be honest I hadnt really go that far in my thinking re organic or not!  Just wanted to work out how to utilise space and what I can grow when!  Sorry I am being hopeless!

Good to see someone living nearby, means we will get similar weather so will be a good guide.

Just asking.  You might find it easier to be non-organic if you have no strong feelings on the subject.   At least then you can take advice from any of the reprobates who frequent these pages.
