Split carrots

I've added a photo (hopefully) of my carrots - they are a great size but suffering from some splitting. Does anyone know the cause? My guess is uneven watering, I didn't really do much watering this year as the rain seemed to be doing it for me! They were grown in raised beds.

Rapid growth or saturation after a dry period.
I think the prevention is to reduce the size of the leaf growth,seem to remember reading that somewhere,not sure though.
