One nest in box but 4 hens ?
« on: September 26, 2008, 22:21 »
One of my ladies has started laying (well I think its just the one) so has "built" her nest right in the middle of the box,the box looks like it will hold 2 nests, what will happen if she is on said nest and one of the other girls wants to start laying too  :?:

P.S any tips on identifying who is laying and who isnt as Iam at work all day and miss the joyous occasion  :?:

they will tend to share the nest.

As for finding out which is laying, probably a webcam?!

Paint their bums.

Wait for the coloured eggs!

(The serious answer is trap nests but don't know how to make these, ask Bodger)
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

In our coop four hens have three next boxes and they only ever use one of them.  Sometimes together (not all four at once but I wouldn't put it past them   )

Some where on here there are drawing of the vent of a laying chicken and a non layer.  Plus you can guess by looking a the size of the comb.

Photos Law.

Plus how old and breed are your birds?

I guess they all share the one spot because the first will have made it nice and cosy and warm, and if she can lay there, it must be safe.

Survival instinct kicking in. And they're very social of course  :)

all four of my girlies lay in the same nest box despite there being four... as Rob said, I was told it was because they guess that if hers is safe then mine will be too!...   :D
