I treated myself to a new spade, a Spear and Jackson Select Digging.

Homebase are selling this for £24.99. I spotted it in Argos for £11.24 on-offer.
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001151&langId=-1&searchTerms=spade

Nice weight and balance, good grip. I am very pleased with this for the price.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Good price for that, being stainless it should become a family heirloom. Mind you I prefer a spade with a flat foot tread (not a sharp edge). I have a carbon steel spade which I welded a 1/2" steel tread on, but I understand that you can't weld stainless with an arc welder.

The main problem with carbon steel is rusting, to prevent this I keep a container with some motor gear oil in (diluted with paraffin) and a 1" paint brush.

I think you can with the correct rods, but TIG welding is better for stainless.

Don't like treaded spades myself but you can buy an attachment to fix to the blade. If the spade feels comfortable to you thgen that is very good however, I doubt it will be so long lasting with a plastic handle and stainless steel such as used on this spade is not as long lasting as a carbon steel one and is not made from one piece so does have a weak spot. Still a bargain though
