When will a LS cockerel be 'active' with the girls?
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:40 »
Does anyone know at what age / development stage a Light Sussex cockerel becomes sexually able with his girlies?  Mine are only about 18-19 weeks so not ready yet but one of my lottie neighbours has LS hens and I think I've got at least one LS male and as they are unrelated he wondered about having mine tread his in the spring.

Now, considering we are talking 6 months away it's probably a moot point as I'd expect him to be busy by that time anyway, but at what age will he become active and would he do it with the other LS's that he's grown up with?  I just know the answer will be yes!

Patrick has just started showing an interest in the girls when they are all in the pond. Sally the Appleyard seems to be his favourite. He is 21 weeks.
No help at all to you what with him being a duck and all
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

well my own Patrick, the Buff Orp, has been helping himself to the 2 hybrids for a few weeks now, (he's about 40 weeks old) but wasn't sure if if different breeds have different schedules or not

Hi SnooziSuzi

My LS cocks started treading some warrens i have when they where 18 weeks old, i put an egg in the incubator and now i have a beautiful 1 week old LS/Warren cross,

The LS cockerals are in with some LS hens of the same age but dont seem to be treading them, i assume they are not sexually active yet.

do the boys know they're underage?  I'd have thought they'd be like dogs and would be randy little b*ggers from as early as possible

Sorry SnooziSuzi, my mistake

the LS were 18 weeks the warrens over a year,

The cockerals seem to know when the hens are sexually active
as i have said the cockerals will tread the warrens but not the LS hens which are the same age as the cockerals,

must be the perfume they wear :D
