Jostaberry cuttings
« on: September 23, 2008, 22:21 »
My Jostaberry and blackcurrant cuttings are dying.  I put them in a mix of manure and sand
and water them.  I think they can survive but would like advice.

When did you do them ?

Blackcurrant cuttings are usually taken in the autumn after leaf fall, taken from hard wood with5-7 buds on bury 3-4 buds deep. Planted in a slit made with your spade and you can sprinkle some sand in with them to help with the drainage.Make sure you have at least 3 buds above soil level. Then water in and leave well alone. most will root. Easy :D

The best mix you can have for cuttings is 50:50 peat and horticultural sand, cuttings and seeds need no nutrients for a start.

Also the manure in your mix  may be making it to strong for any young roots and burning them.
