Treats for Ducks?
« on: September 22, 2008, 14:53 »
Does anyone know what ducks would consider a treat but hens wouldn't like? for example my hens love chopped boiled egg with cod liver oil, but the ducks don't, whenever i give my ducks a treat the hens come legging it (you'd think they were crazed from starvation) and scare the ducks away, i wondered if there was anything the hens wouldn't like but the ducks would, it's a shame because the ducks are quite skittish but they have started running to me only to get nothing, any ideas?

Don't know about whayt chickens don't like as they sound like gannets! But my ducks lurve dried cat food!
Also adore tomaotes, slugs, lettuce and currants (the fresh ones not the dried ones).

Not sure what chooks think about these :?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Mine too! Luckally they are now too big to have a bath in the cats water bowl which did seem a little like adding insult to injury!

my hens also like pears, mealworms, and plums (what was left over from Thirsk poultry market) don't know about apples, they'll probably take them just to spite the ducks...........

Our chooks like apples. They had some windfalls from my Dad's tree.

But then we tried the ducks with sliced tomatoes and they didn't want to know.

It seems they all have different tastes.

If you floated something in a dish of water, would the chickens take it ??

maybe a BIG dish that they'd have to stand in.

some one told me Chickens love slugs,  but so far they have kept away from them, the fact that there 3 to 4 times bigger than there heads is beside the point.

So will ducks eat slugs ??? I'm not realy tempted as no large space for pond etc.
Graham = 2x Border collie Dogs, 2x Cats, 1x Wife, 2x Kids, 2x Hamsters and now 10x chickens.

My ducks love slugs and snails pretty much more than anything else. I haven't seen more than 1 or 2 in the whole year, even in the veg patch which used to be overrun with them and is fenced off from the ducks or they eat it too!

Think that they also eat all the eggs in the soil so the population is just annilalated!

Only need a little pond

Beautiful Photo Kate :)

Did Rob used to give Titch & Co Rabbit food as a treat???

I know for a fact my hen's turn their beaks up at that :?
Perhaps you could put it in their water dish.

The other thing I do is put some corn in the water dish, if it's deep the chucks don't try & get the corn out & the ducks love sieving it up :D
