Thomson and Morgan catalogue has so many spuds in it. I can't choose what to get.

Come on help me out here, what spuds do you like best?

Where else might I look for seed potatoes?

When for next year ? then my main crop will be Roma ab fab this year and tasted great no slug damage, I also grew Cara which have been decimated by slugs    so there out and will also grow pink fir as they are lovely.
Earlies I like rocket.  :)

2009 will see me growing my favorites again. Earlies Rocket & Winston, some of the Rocket go in very early under fleece. Main crop will be Picasso - Stemster - Valor - Sarpo Mira & Sarpo Axona. If you want all the gen on the different varieties go on to the Potato Council website and there all listed
Type in The British Variety Database and you shuold get it .
hope this helps you.
Just finished lifting the main lot only the Sarpo's to do now and that will be in about 21 days as the are not even started to die down yet ( may have to be helped a little ) :D

By the time everyone replies you will have more suggestions than varieties in the T&M catalogue.

For me International Kidney did well this year as did Foremost. Have decided not to grow a second early next year but to grow extra Pink Firs and start lifting some of them earlier.

Maincrop King Edwards are superb this year.  Kerr's Pinks cropped very heavily but were quite scabby - this may be a consequence of land in cultivation for first time so I'll give them another chance next year.

Good luck

this years crop - Charlotte super taste again, Nadine a bit scabby, Anya excellent but low yield, Lady balfour waste of space, Cara ok. So Charlotte and Anya are definites, not sure yet after that.

Not much response and not much agreement then.

I think I will give some pink fir a try next year, never tried them before.

Fancy Charlotte and probably pentland javelin.

No one recommended king edwards???

Any alternative places to buy? I would rather order now than wait for what the shops have in come spring time.

Nicola for earlies every time.

Definately agree with "Picasso" as a main crop.

I used to grow 'em and get almost 10lb per plant sometimes, they make the best baked potatoes ever,if you can eat a two pounder

I'm in Sweden so I don't know if it's the same types over here, but here's what I had this year-

A rubbish Finnish type that I won't even bother looking up, now that I've forgotten the name. Poor yield, poor flavour, and prone to the slug damage. I was late buying potatoes as it was my first year and I got the plot in May. These were all that were left at the garden centre, and now I know why. "The most popular potato in Finland!" it said on  the bag. I doubt it.

Asterix (which appeared magically all over both plots)- delicious as new potatoes or as full-sized monsters, vigourous growth, no slug damage, good yield and best of all, BRIGHT PINK! A neighbour identified them for us and said they would probably come back again as everyone was plagued by them self-seeding, but I have saved some just to be sure.

Almond potatoes- these are a bit of a Swedish delicacy, eaten small with surstromming (a kind of fermented trout, don't be tempted). But they are indeed delicious potatoes to eat steamed with butter and herbs or panfried. Very floury and sensitive to cook but worth the effort. The yield is not very high but most people only grow them for a treat anyway.

Next year I will have earlies, second earlies, a good one for mash and a baking potato. I look forward to long winter nights reading up and trying to choose which ones.
