blackrock not laying
« on: September 18, 2008, 09:43 »
Marmite is now at 22 weeks old and isn't laying. Is this normal for a blackrock. Her comb has been red for weeks and she's crouching down since last month.

My other layed a lot earlier but are different breeds, nothing suggests egg eating so i hoping it's just down to her bing a blackrock.
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

when we picked up our birds and one is a blackrock (mine infact) they said the birds are maturing later due to the dodo weather. ours is about 17 to 18 weeks we believe.  so from an uninformed view I would just say wait, she will soon start performing.

Note. We were told if weather picks up then she will lay sooner if not dont expect eggs till Feb time.

I have 2 blackrocks and a bluebelle we got them beginning of August and they were all around the same age, the bluebelle has been laying since mid august but nothing from the blackrocks. We were told the same thing about the weather etc.... Poppy (blackrock) looks ready, I just assume she will lay when she is ready, Betty (other blackrock) doesn't look anywhere near ready, not filled out as much as the other 2 or as red faced as the others, again she'll be ready when she is ready.

Thanks, happy now.

I've never really been worried about my hens laying as you say they lay when ready and they did. Just started to realise how old she is now, suspected that blackrocks start to lay later.
